"Anchored Mirror"

(abstract)

The architectural/sculptural piece interacts with the site. Materials of the project are the light, the geomorphology and the climate. It is a stainless steel « Monolith » anchored in the rock of the "Urgull" mountain on the "Paseo Nuevo" promenade facing the sea of Cantabria in Donostia/San-Sebastian, a city in the province of Guipuzkoa in Spain.

The « Monolith » inserted in the rock forms part of the mountain. Inside, it is crossed by the « Tunnel of Light ». The form, the orientation of both the Monolith and the Tunnel are influenced by the surroundings.

The « Monolith » is a link which connects the elements of the landscape. It is oriented towards the Edouardo TXILLIDA sculpture the ³Comb of the Winds² on the other side of the bay. The future Jorge OTEIZA corten steel sculpture will be placed near the ³ANCHORED MIRROR². The ensemble will exist in a dynamic dialogue. The exterior polished mirror aspect of the architectural stainless steel Monolith favours its automatic integration in the urban and natural environment. Employing visual mirror effect the piece reveals the Mountain, the Rock, the Climatic Atmosphere, the Sea, People¹s Movements, Changes of Light according to an infinity of nuances.

The entrance is a pivoting double-face mirror on which is engraved the dedication of the Basque poet Bernardo ATXAGA *. Its rounded contour correponds with the « Tunnel of Light » form inside the building. This tunnel made of a double translucid opalescent polycarbonate vault, separates the unique abstract white interior space into two parts. The natural light crosses the translucid roof and the « Tunnel of Light » to illuminate the entrance of the « Monolith ».

* ³ On this mirror a thousand eyes (1) will rest (and the world) (2)² (1) mirrors themselves (2) a mirror to so many other worlds. texte en français: ³ dans ce miroir mille yeux (1) se poseront (et le monde) (2)² (1) des miroirs eux aussi (2) miroir de tant d¹autres mondes.
